Chennai City Crime Branch (CCB) police are examining 118 documents seized during searches linked to a case alleging irregularities of over Rs 100 crore in private school recognition and building approvals during a previous DMK regime.

Investigators said the material was recovered from nine locations, including premises belonging to former School Education Minister Mahesh, as well as places linked to his aides. The seized items include property papers, bank details, cheques, 18 mobile phones, three laptops, eight pen drives and two monitors.

The case stems from allegations that approvals were obtained through malpractice. In connection with the probe, Private Schools Association president Arasakumar and former MLA Muthukumar, among others, have been arrested. Police have also been scrutinising related locations and bank transactions.

Based on the documents and transaction analysis, police said a link to Mahesh emerged, following which a case was registered under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Officers are also working to retrieve deleted data from digital records.

Mahesh is scheduled to appear for questioning on September 18 at the CCB unit functioning under the Chennai Police Commissioner’s Office. Police said they have prepared questions based on the seized records and recovered data.
