Chennai: Minister Nirmal Kumar on Thursday alleged that DMK members were spreading defamatory statements following the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple Kumbabishekam, which he said concluded in a smooth and grand manner.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, the minister said he did not issue any passes for the Kumbabishekam event and claimed he came to know the colour of the pass only a day earlier. He added that even his family members did not attend the function.

He alleged that some DMK members attempted to create issues around the event, and said the rumours were being spread because they could not accept that the ceremony was conducted successfully.

On the power situation, Nirmal Kumar said several states were facing power cuts, citing Punjab as having long outages. He said Tamil Nadu was purchasing power from the open market to manage shortages and claimed the state had handled the situation better in comparison.

The minister also criticised TTV Dhinakaran over remarks related to MISA and Stalin’s arrest, and made political comments about Dhinakaran’s shifting positions and his past relationship with Jayalalithaa.
