Surendra Kohli, 50, who was earlier acquitted in the Nithari serial murder cases, was found dead by suicide on Thursday (Sept 18) in Haridwar. His body was recovered in a hanging position at a small tea stall he ran on Sapt Sarovar Road in the Bhupatwala area.

Kohli had been considered a key accused in the 2006 Nithari cases from Noida involving the abduction, sexual assault and killings of girls and women. He spent about 19 years in prison and had received death sentences in multiple cases.

However, the Allahabad High Court and later the Supreme Court acquitted him in a series of cases, citing lack of evidence and absence of proper forensic support. After the Supreme Court cleared him in the last remaining case in November 2025, he was released from jail.

Police reached the spot and began an inquiry. Preliminary findings suggest he may have taken the step due to family-related issues, and a case has been registered for further investigation.
