The Union government has approved the construction of 25,000 houses for low-income families in Tamil Nadu under Phase 2 of the Prime Minister’s Urban Housing scheme, officials said.

The “Housing for All” programme is being implemented by the Centre. After the first phase was completed, Phase 2 was announced in 2024, with an overall plan to build one crore houses at an estimated cost of ₹2.50 lakh crore.

Across the country, approvals have been issued for 71.55 lakh houses in 5,206 towns, according to an official from the urban habitat development board.

In Tamil Nadu, the sanctioned homes will be built in 722 towns, with each unit planned at around 300 sq ft. The Centre will provide a subsidy of ₹2.5 lakh per house, while the remaining cost will be borne by the Tamil Nadu government.

The official added that Phase 2 gives priority to constructing homes using new technologies instead of conventional methods.
