The Election Commission (EC) has informed the Supreme Court that a large number of appeals remain pending in West Bengal in connection with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
According to the EC, the pending matters relate to requests and objections arising from the addition and deletion of names in the voter list during the SIR exercise. The Commission said the SIR process is being carried out across states and Union Territories.
The submission was made in a case concerning claims and objections from voters whose names were removed during the SIR process. The matter was heard by a bench led by Chief Justice Suryakant, along with Justices Jaymala Bagchi and V. Mohana.
In an affidavit filed before the court, the EC stated that out of 38,20,683 appeals received so far, 1,02,231 have been disposed of through tribunals appointed by the court. It added that 37,18,452 appeals are still pending in West Bengal.
