The Election Commission on Friday released the final list of candidates for the by-elections to the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies, scheduled to be held on October 6.
Nominations for the two seats began on September 9. A total of 40 nomination papers were filed in Madurantakam and 39 in Dharapuram, setting the stage for a five-cornered contest involving TVK, DMK, AIADMK, Naam Tamilar Katchi and Communist parties.
In Madurantakam, 27 candidates remain in the race—10 from political parties and 17 independents. Key contenders include TVK’s Maragatham Kumaravel, DMK’s Paranthaman, AIADMK’s Kanitha Sampath, CPM’s Suganthi and the Naam Tamilar Katchi candidate. Officials said 28 nominations were accepted initially, but one independent later withdrew.
In Dharapuram, 22 candidates are contesting. Prominent names include TVK’s Sathiyabama, DMK’s Suganya, AIADMK’s Bhanumathi and CPI’s Lakshmanan.
Separately, the report noted that Puducherry’s Thattanchavadi constituency has 11 candidates in the fray.
