Chief Minister Vijay has instructed officials to provide students with hot, tasty breakfast with adequate nutrition under the state’s expanded school breakfast programme, now named the Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme.
The breakfast initiative, earlier launched for government and government-aided schools covering Classes 1 to 5, is set to be extended to Classes 6 to 8. With the expansion, around 15.30 lakh students studying in Classes 6–8 are expected to benefit.
For the current financial year, the government has earmarked an additional Rs 217 crore for the expansion. The total allocation for the overall breakfast scheme has been fixed at Rs 724 crore.
The Chief Minister reviewed implementation in a meeting at the Secretariat. He directed that cooking centres and serving areas be maintained in a clean and hygienic manner, with continuous monitoring by officials.
He also asked all department personnel involved in the programme to coordinate effectively and carry out their assigned responsibilities properly to ensure every student receives the intended meal.
