Bengaluru-based Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) is preparing to start deliveries of the Tejas Mk-1A light combat aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF) by the end of this year. The company has set a target of handing over 10 aircraft within 2026.
The Mk-1A has gained importance as the IAF is said to have a shortfall in light combat aircraft numbers. HAL has signed contracts with the IAF for a total of 180 Mk-1A aircraft, with the combined value put at Rs 1.10 lakh crore.
The first contract for 83 aircraft was signed in February 2021, followed by a second contract for 97 aircraft in September 2025. However, deliveries under the 2021 contract were delayed.
HAL has attributed the delay to late availability of engines from US-based GE and difficulties in securing key certifications. The company said that if engine supplies continue without disruption, it can deliver the 83 aircraft under the first contract within three to four years.
Meanwhile, work is also underway on the upgraded Tejas Mk-2. With structural work completed, HAL is targeting the first ground test in March 2027 and the first flight test later the same year, though the contract for Mk-2 has not yet been signed.
