New Delhi: The Union government has reiterated that the welfare of Indian citizens remains its top priority and that it will not yield to pressure from foreign countries.
The statement comes after US President Donald Trump signed an economic sanctions bill targeting Russia. The legislation reportedly allows the US to impose a 100% tariff on countries such as India and China.
Responding to the development, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said India follows an independent foreign policy and does not alter its positions based on directives from other nations. He added that decisions are taken solely in line with India’s national interests.
Singh also maintained that any tariffs imposed on India are unjustified and that the government has consistently conveyed this view. He said India would buy crude oil from any country if it is available at a favourable price, stressing that the government will take firm steps to ensure India’s strength and stability.
