Bypolls are scheduled for October 6 in Madurantakam and Dharapuram after AIADMK MLAs resigned, triggering vacancies in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The resignations came amid a wider churn in the party, including leaders leaving and some former MLAs joining TVK, according to the report.
In Madurantakam, PMK is seen as having a significant vote base. The report notes that AIADMK had won the seat in the last two Assembly elections while in alliance with PMK, making PMK’s stance a key factor in the bypoll.
However, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has announced that the party will not extend support to any side in the by-election. A senior PMK functionary, quoted in the report, said the political landscape has shifted after TVK formed the government and that Tamil Nadu politics may no longer remain a straight DMK–AIADMK contest.
The functionary argued that backing AIADMK now could backfire if the party loses, potentially putting PMK’s influence in Madurantakam under question and weakening its leverage ahead of local body elections. The report also suggests the bypoll outcome could trigger further political realignments—if TVK wins both seats, more resignations and switches may follow; if TVK loses, the Vijay-led government could face pressure—prompting PMK to remain a “spectator” for now.
