Madurai: The DMK’s long-awaited announcement of new district secretaries has been postponed once again, leading to growing unease within the party’s Youth Wing.
After the T.V.K.’s electoral success, the DMK began an organisational reshuffle aimed at giving greater space to youth and women. The party increased the number of district secretaries from 77 to 110 and decided to appoint one district secretary for every two Assembly constituencies.
As part of the revamp, the party indicated that those aged 70 and above, or those who have served three terms as district secretary, would not be given another term. With this, several Youth Wing functionaries—reportedly recommended by Udhayanidhi Stalin—were considered for the new posts, and a list was said to be ready.
However, party sources say the announcement has been repeatedly held up due to objections from a section of senior leaders. Even during the DMK’s “Mupperum Vizha”, the list was not released.
There is now talk that the announcement may come only after the Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections. DMK functionaries also said the Youth Wing is pressing for an early decision to counter negative narratives and to build momentum among young voters, but that resistance from some seniors around the leadership has delayed the move.
