KOTTAYAM: A new bridge at Erumeli in Kerala’s Kottayam district was inaugurated after the earlier structure was badly damaged during the 2018 floods, disrupting local transport in the Poonjar Assembly segment.
Following the damage, residents urged the government to build a replacement bridge to restore connectivity in the area.
During the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, then Poonjar MLA Sebastian Kulathunkal of the Kerala Congress allocated Rs 80 lakh from his constituency development fund for the project. However, a change in government took place before the construction could be completed.
After the works were finished, the present MLA, Sebastian M J of the Congress, decided that the former MLA should be given the honour of inaugurating the bridge, citing his key role in making the project possible.
Both leaders jointly cut the ribbon and formally opened the bridge for public use.
