The Delhi High Court on Monday declined to entertain a petition seeking registration of an FIR and a probe by the CBI or a Special Investigation Team into alleged unaccounted cash found at the residence of former Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma.
The petition referred to a fire incident at Varma’s Delhi home on March 14, 2025, during which burnt currency notes were reportedly recovered from a room, triggering widespread attention at the time.
According to the case details cited in court, the matter was earlier examined by the Supreme Court and a special inquiry committee constituted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and the allegations against Varma were found to be established. As impeachment proceedings gathered pace and an inquiry report was submitted in Parliament, Varma resigned from his judicial post.
The plea was filed by advocate Kanshyam Upadhyaya. Hearing the matter, Justice Amit Bansal said he would not take up the petition, remarking that it appeared to be a retaliatory move and questioning why the petitioner had not approached the trial court for an FIR.
Following the court’s observations, the petitioner withdrew the plea. A similar petition filed earlier in the Supreme Court was dismissed on August 7, the court noted.
