The Madras High Court on September 22 dismissed a petition filed by former DMK minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam seeking to discharge himself and his family members from a disproportionate assets case registered in 2011.
Panneerselvam, who served as a minister during the DMK government from 2006 to 2011, faces allegations that he accumulated assets worth about Rs 3 crore beyond his known sources of income. The case was registered by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption department.
Earlier, a Cuddalore court had ordered the discharge of Panneerselvam, his wife Senthamizhselvi and their son Kathiravan. That order was later set aside by the Madras High Court.
Hearing the latest plea, Justice Lakshminarayanan rejected the request for discharge. The court also directed that the trial be conducted and completed expeditiously, based on the evidence and materials submitted by the anti-corruption agency.
