Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on September 22 inaugurated the expanded Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme at a middle school in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai.
The breakfast programme, earlier implemented in government and government-aided schools for Classes 1 to 5 under the previous DMK government, has now been extended to cover students from Classes 6 to 8. The state government has also renamed the initiative as the Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme.
During the launch, the Chief Minister served food to students and sat with them on the floor to have the meal. He also interacted with students and enquired about the food being provided.
With the expansion, an additional 15.30 lakh students studying in Classes 6 to 8 across 15,454 government and government-aided schools are expected to benefit.
For the current financial year, the government has earmarked an additional Rs 217.63 crore for the expanded coverage, taking the total allocation for the scheme to Rs 724 crore.
