A heated scene unfolded in Karnataka’s Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council on Monday over whether “Vande Mataram” should be sung in full during official proceedings.
As the special session began in the Assembly, the House secretary started the song and members joined in. After the first two stanzas, Congress legislators stopped singing, citing the state government’s stand that only the opening two stanzas would be used at government events.
BJP and JD(S) members continued and completed the full version, raising slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai”. The competing chants led to disorder in the House.
A similar confrontation played out in the Legislative Council, where only two stanzas were sung initially. BJP members then sang the full song and protested against the ruling party, moving near the Chair and raising slogans.
Amid the commotion, Council Chairman Saleem adjourned the House for 10 minutes.
