Heavy rain continuing for the past few days intensified across Kerala, triggering sudden flooding in rivers and landslides in multiple locations. Authorities confirmed that nine people died in rain-related incidents in a single day.
In Malappuram district, tourists were bathing in the Kottappuzha river near an eco-tourism spot at T.K. Colony when rainfall strengthened. Locals asked them to return to the bank, but as many were moving back, the water level rose sharply and some were swept away.
Rescue teams later recovered five bodies from the river incident, including Sajitha (26), Sajath (30), Raheem (32), Rafiq (29) and a 60-year-old man.
In Munnar’s Vattavada area, a landslide claimed the lives of Balakrishna Perumal (51) and Chinnammal (38). In Kottayam district, another landslide killed Appachan (80), while a rockfall in the same district led to the death of Sangeetha (35), a tourist from Chennai.
Following the incidents, the state imposed various restrictions at tourist destinations until the rains subside. Rainfall is continuing in several parts of Kerala.
