Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the brother of UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, died on September 21 at the age of 76.
Dubai authorities announced 10 days of official mourning following his death. National flags have been lowered to half-mast across Dubai.
In a social media post, Sheikh Mohammed expressed grief over the loss of his brother, saying he would remain in their prayers and hearts. Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan and other leaders also conveyed condolences.
Born in 1950, Sheikh Ahmed was the youngest son of the late former Dubai ruler Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. He studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK.
He served as Deputy Chief of Dubai Police and Public Security, and held senior roles in Dubai’s security establishment, including as commander of Dubai’s military. He was also involved in real estate and sports, and his passing has prompted widespread sorrow in the UAE.
