A controversy has erupted in Texas during the run-up to the US midterm elections after YouTuber Jesse Hughes demanded the removal of a 90-foot Hanuman statue, prompting sharp reactions from Hindu organisations and members of the Indian-American community.
The statue stands at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, near Houston, and is known as the “Statue of Unity”. Opened in August 2024, it is described as the third-tallest statue in the United States.
Sharing a photo of the monument on social media, Hughes wrote that it would be brought down “once we win,” a remark that critics said reflected racism and religious intolerance. Some American politicians also spoke out against the statement.
The issue has since become part of wider political arguments in Texas around immigration and culture. Reports note that certain conservative Christian groups have opposed the statue since its inauguration.
Former US military veteran Ruchir Bakshi condemned Hughes’ comments, calling them unpatriotic and a threat against Hinduism. Political observers, meanwhile, said Texas Governor Greg Abbott of the Republican Party is expected to retain his post after the midterm election.
