Vigilance and anti-corruption police conducted simultaneous raids at several municipal offices across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, seizing key documents during the searches. The action followed complaints of bribery in municipal departments in different districts.
In Mayiladuthurai district, a six-member team led by Inspector Arul Priya searched the Sirkazhi municipality office. Officials and staff were kept inside the premises while the team questioned them and carried out checks.
In Salem district, anti-corruption police raided the Attur municipality after allegations of widespread bribery. During the operation, officers recovered and seized Rs 50,000 found discarded near the town planning section office, and questioned staff to ascertain ownership.
In Sivaganga district, a municipal engineer identified as Patturajan in Manamadurai was arrested after contractors allegedly handed over Rs 2 lakh as the first instalment of a bribe. Police said he had demanded Rs 4 lakh to release payments related to road works worth Rs 4 crore.
Searches were also reported at the Avinashi municipality office in Tiruppur district, the Mettupalayam municipality office in Coimbatore district, and the Udhagamandalam (Ooty) municipality office, based on information received by the vigilance wing.
