New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set a deadline to eliminate drug circulation in India by December 2029, calling for intensified enforcement and coordinated action across the country.
Addressing a conference in Delhi of heads of anti-narcotics units from states and Union Territories, Shah said traffickers would face “ruthless” action. He asserted that not even a gram of narcotics would be allowed to move into or out of India.
He said anti-drug operations would be strengthened district-wise with comprehensive monitoring. Shah noted that the government has been taking sustained steps over the past five years towards the difficult goal of building a drug-free India, describing narcotics as a major threat to the nation and the world.
According to him, key focus areas in the fight have already been identified. He added that states have prepared an action plan to integrate intelligence gathering, investigation, financial measures and prosecution.
Shah said the collective effort would aim to uproot drug circulation by December 31, 2029, urging agencies to meet targets and complete the work within the stipulated timeline.
