Chennai witnessed fresh political heat over recurring power-cut complaints in parts of Tamil Nadu, prompting Chief Minister Vijay to conduct a sudden inspection at the Electricity Board headquarters on Anna Salai on September 23.
During the visit to the board’s head office, the Chief Minister reviewed the current status of power generation and electricity demand in the state, seeking details from Minister Nirmal Kumar and senior officials. He later left after completing the inspection.
Speaking to reporters, Minister Nirmal Kumar said the review also covered plans to create 600 new sub-stations across Tamil Nadu and steps being taken to repair around 6,000 transformers. He claimed that maintenance work had been postponed due to elections, leading to faults surfacing now.
The minister appealed to the public to give the department time to carry out corrective work, stating that transformers are failing when they are unable to handle load in areas where repairs have not been completed. He added that a proposal to upgrade 20-year-old sub-stations has been submitted to the Chief Minister.
