The high-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly has begun in New York amid wars, climate-related disasters and wider global uncertainty. Leaders, prime ministers, foreign ministers and senior delegates from over 130 countries are gathering for the discussions.
The 81st UN General Assembly session has been underway since September 8. India is represented by a delegation led by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Addressing the meeting, US President Donald Trump referred to the continuing Iran-related tensions and the Russia–Ukraine war, saying the conflicts have had a major impact worldwide. He alleged that Iran is a leading source of terrorism and called for the country to be isolated economically and militarily.
Trump urged countries to act together against Iran until shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are resolved, nuclear weapons-related activities are halted and support for terrorism ends. He said he faced a choice between reaching a deal or taking harsher action, but added that Iran could be given a final chance to return to a path of peace.
He also noted that the US will hold interim parliamentary elections on November 3, and said he did not want to link the issue to the polls. However, he expressed confidence that an agreement with Iran could be reached after the election.
