New Delhi: The Union government has introduced an amendment to packaging regulations to require vegetarian and non-vegetarian identification marks on everyday personal-care products such as soap, shampoo and toothpaste.
Until now, such colour codes have been commonly seen on food packets, where a green mark indicates vegetarian content and a red mark indicates non-vegetarian content. The government has now decided to extend a similar system to select non-food packaged goods.
To implement this, the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 have been amended and the change has been brought into effect immediately.
As per the updated rule, products that are fully vegetarian must carry a green dot. If animal fat is used, the pack must display a red or brown dot to indicate non-vegetarian content.
The government said the mark should be printed prominently on the top side of the package so that consumers can easily notice it and choose products that match their preferences.
