The Cauvery Management Authority (CMA) has directed Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu at the rate of 4,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs) for 15 days.
The decision was taken at the CMA’s 58th meeting held in New Delhi on Wednesday. During the meeting, the Tamil Nadu government requested that Karnataka be instructed to release 18,000 cusecs.
According to the report, Karnataka has repeatedly resisted releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, despite directions issued from time to time by the Cauvery management mechanisms formed following Supreme Court orders.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has opposed the release, stating that water cannot be let out when there is insufficient storage in the reservoir. He also said the state would approach the court against the CMA’s direction.
