India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has conveyed India’s dissatisfaction to the United States over moves to impose additional tariffs on countries, including India, that buy crude oil from Russia and Iran.
Jaishankar, who is in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly meetings, met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and raised India’s concerns during the discussion.
He said sanctions-related measures targeting Russia and Iran could adversely affect India’s interests, and flagged the potential impact of such steps on the country.
In a post on X, Jaishankar described the meeting as productive, noting that they discussed India’s interests and concerns regarding sanctions on Russia and Iran, along with the situation in the Gulf and developments related to Ukraine.
The meeting comes amid reports that US President Donald Trump is continuing efforts to bring in legislation that would impose trade restrictions and additional tariffs on nations that keep purchasing Russian and Iranian crude. India has been among the major buyers of Russian crude since 2022.
