A Kashmiri social activist, Tasleema Akhtar, has accused Pakistan of attempting to turn the Kashmir region under its control into a “graveyard,” speaking at the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
In her remarks, she condemned alleged firing by Pakistani security forces on civilians who were protesting peacefully for basic rights. She argued that a state that suppresses rights movements with bullets cannot genuinely claim concern for the welfare of Kashmiris.
Akhtar also said Pakistan’s description of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as “Azad Kashmir” is a “big lie.” She alleged that Pakistan is facilitating the infiltration of terrorists into Kashmir as part of a broader effort to destabilise the region.
She further claimed that in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, innocent protesters are being killed, and that genuine representatives of the occupied population are not being allowed to speak at the UN. According to her, individuals from London are being brought in to speak for Pakistan to project a misleading image.
