Scientists have long studied whether Mars—the planet next to Earth in the solar system—once had conditions suitable for life.

NASA’s Perseverance rover, launched in 2020, has been conducting surface investigations since 2021 in the Jezero Crater region. The mission focuses on searching for traces of ancient life and examining soil and rock particles, geology, and climate.

In its latest findings, the rover has detected evidence indicating that the Jezero Crater area once had water activity, including waves and lakes.

Researchers view such clues as important for understanding Mars’ past environment and for guiding ongoing studies on the planet’s history.
