Opposition parties in the INDIA bloc are preparing to move a third impeachment notice in Parliament against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, according to political sources.
The move follows media reports that the other Election Commissioners—Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi—had raised written objections to the CEC on multiple issues, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The report said objections were recorded 14 times over the past 10 months on matters such as adding new voters, deleting names, access to the voter database, and changes to Form 6 for new registrations.
The developments have triggered strong reactions in Delhi’s political circles, with several political leaders demanding that the CEC step down. Senior opposition MPs reportedly met at the Parliament complex to discuss a coordinated response, alleging that the CEC had undermined the dignity of the constitutional office.
Sources said the opposition plans to submit the notice with the full backing of all opposition parties, choosing a joint strategy rather than separate efforts. A submission is expected soon, and reports suggest it could be filed within the next week even without a Parliament session.
Earlier, opposition parties had submitted two impeachment notices against Gyanesh Kumar on March 12 and April 24. The first was not admitted by Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, while the second notice remains pending without a decision.
