The Madras High Court has dismissed a petition filed by Surendran, who sought administrative rights over a property in Tiruchirappalli said to have belonged to former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR).
Surendran told the court that he is the son of Janaki’s first husband and requested that the right to manage the Trichy property be granted to him. He argued that MGR had executed a will in 1987 regarding his assets, but that the Trichy property was not mentioned and had not been transferred to anyone.
During the hearing before Justice Maria Clete, heirs of MGR’s brother Chakrapani sought to be impleaded, stating that they too had a claim over the Trichy property.
In its order, the court noted that no proof was produced to establish Janaki as MGR’s legal heir in this case. It also pointed out that Janaki died in 1996 and the petition was filed only in 2019, and that the petitioner had not provided key details such as who possessed the property in the intervening period, whether it was transferred, or whether it was mortgaged.
Holding that the petition lacked adequate documents and clear property-related rights, the court dismissed both the main petition and the intervention applications. However, it granted liberty to approach the appropriate civil court with proper records.
