Senior police officials are allegedly working to prevent arrest action against personnel linked to the ‘Jem’ Veeramani case, as the investigation gathers pace, sources said.
The probe is also examining bribery allegations involving police officers. Despite what sources describe as available evidence, officers could face arrest on accusations that the case against Veeramani was prematurely closed.
According to police sources, complaints filed within the department typically move through senior officials before being routed to the investigating officer. In this instance, the complaint against Veeramani reportedly reached Yasmin, who was then an Assistant Commissioner in Chennai Police’s Anti-Vice unit. Officials reviewed the handling of the case and, based on their directions, the inquiry was closed, the sources said.
Now, however, the blame is said to be falling largely on Yasmin, and she may face arrest. Police sources also claimed that senior IPS officers have submitted a report to Chief Minister Vijay, arguing that arrests could erode public trust and discourage lower-level officers from conducting investigations when acting on superior orders.
