Tamil Nadu has expanded the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the POCSO case linked to businessman Gem Granites’ Veeramani by adding seven more assistant commissioners.
Veeramani has been arrested in connection with the sexual assault case and is currently lodged in Puzhal prison. The allegations state that minors were sexually abused over several years.
Police have also arrested a woman identified as Shanthi and her husband Mahendra Simhan, alleging they were accomplices. With reports suggesting the case may have wider links, the state government had earlier constituted an SIT.
The SIT includes four women IPS officers—Additional Commissioner (Central Crime Branch) Thenmozhi, Joint Commissioner (Chennai West Law & Order) Disha Mittal, Police Headquarters media liaison officer Mutharasi, and Deputy Commissioner of the Chennai unit for prevention of crimes against women and children Geethanjali. The team is to function under the direct supervision of the Chennai Police Commissioner.
The latest expansion of the SIT was ordered by DGP Mahesh Kumar Agarwal, adding seven assistant commissioners to strengthen the investigation.
