New Delhi: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said a passenger car that runs on 100% ethanol is set to be introduced next month, and its fuel cost could be about half compared to a petrol car.
He noted that India is already implementing the E20 policy, under which petrol is blended with 20% ethanol. In this backdrop, Toyota’s Innova “flex-fuel” model that can operate on 100% ethanol is expected to go on sale in October.
Gadkari said ethanol is used in 19 countries and claimed there have been no complaints so far in India regarding vehicles using ethanol-blended fuel. He added that the upcoming model will not require petrol.
According to him, the vehicle will also generate about 60% electricity while running, which will charge its hybrid battery. The stored charge can then be used to run the electric motor as well.
At the same event, Gadkari urged wider adoption of app-based bike taxi services, saying existing two-wheeler owners could earn income without additional investment. He said states were being asked to facilitate such opportunities, which could create jobs for millions if implemented nationwide.
