Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply to Indian citizens even as conflict in West Asia affected global energy flows.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Asia Society Policy Institute, Albanese said shipping through the Strait of Hormuz was disrupted due to the war, forcing many countries to confront fuel shortages.
He said India managed to keep fuel available to a large number of people during Modi’s tenure, and argued that the Prime Minister should receive due recognition for this.
Albanese noted that when crude procurement from West Asia faced difficulties, India increased purchases from countries such as Venezuela, Brazil and Nigeria, while continuing imports from Russia and other nations.
He added that over the past 11 years, India expanded the number of countries it imports fuel from to 41 from 27, which helped maintain uninterrupted distribution domestically.
