New Delhi: The new Parliament building has begun functioning, with its main entrance named “Makar Dwar”. During the monsoon session, heavy rain in Delhi led to water collecting like a pool at the entrance, making some MPs hesitant to step out.
Reports said MPs entering the premises were forced to walk through the water and also got drenched in the rain. At the time, around 400 umbrellas were purchased, and staff escorted MPs into the building using them.
Opposition parties criticised the situation, alleging that the new Parliament—built at a cost of about Rs 1,200 crore—had serious shortcomings.
To address the issue, Speaker Om Birla, after consulting building experts, prepared a plan to add a portico-like cover in front of Makar Dwar. A verandah-style structure is now being constructed at the entrance, aimed at preventing waterlogging and reducing the need for umbrellas in future.
