Public sector banks have announced that customers will not be charged extra for ATM transactions during the nationwide bank employees’ strike scheduled from September 28 to 30.
The decision is aimed at reducing inconvenience to account holders during the three-day disruption. Banks said the waiver will apply even to customers who have already crossed their monthly quota of free ATM transactions.
Several PSU banks, including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India and Indian Bank, have issued statements confirming the move.
Under current RBI rules, customers can make up to five free cash withdrawals per month at their own bank’s ATMs. For other banks’ ATMs, the free limit is three transactions in metro cities—Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR and Kolkata—and five in other locations.
Once the free limit is exceeded, banks can charge up to Rs 23 per transaction (excluding GST). However, PSU banks said these additional charges will not be levied for ATM transactions during the strike days.
