Support for India’s long-standing bid to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC) is gaining momentum at the ongoing 81st UN General Assembly session in New York.
On the sidelines of the UN meetings, a separate gathering was held by the Visegrád Group (V4), a Central European bloc comprising Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. India was invited to participate in the meeting.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held talks with the deputy prime ministers and foreign ministers of the V4 countries. The group conveyed its support for India’s efforts to secure a permanent seat on the UNSC.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking at the UN General Assembly, reiterated Russia’s backing for India’s bid. He also opposed expanding permanent membership for Western countries, while supporting greater representation for Asia and Africa.
The report also noted that Portugal and Mauritius have expressed support for India’s permanent membership in the UNSC.
