Chennai: Liquor sales in Tamil Nadu have not declined despite the closure of 717 TASMAC outlets, with average daily sales now nearing 1 crore bottles, according to figures cited in the report.
To curb irregularities, the state had fully computerised the supply chain last year—from liquor factories to retail sale through TASMAC shops. Under the system, staff scan each bottle using handheld devices at the outlet, enabling more accurate tracking of sales.
Last year, when 4,765 outlets were operating, average daily sales were around 93 lakh bottles of beer and other liquor. After a change in administration, Chief Minister Vijay ordered the closure in June of 717 shops located near educational institutions, places of worship and bus stands.
Even after the shutdowns, sales have not fallen. With 4,048 shops currently functioning, average daily sales have risen to about 1 crore bottles, crossing that mark on weekly holidays. The report notes that if one bottle is assumed per buyer, it suggests around one crore consumers in the state.
TASMAC has also recently introduced a website-based facility where customers can select preferred liquor, make payments online and collect purchases at shops. The portal lists categories such as whisky, brandy, rum, vodka, beer, wine and gin, along with price details.
