A professor at Annamalai University in Chidambaram has been suspended after a student alleged he spoke to her in an indecent manner, officials said.
The complainant, a 29-year-old married research scholar from the same locality, said the incident occurred on September 15 when she visited the Chemistry department office. She alleged that department head Rajendran, 59, made inappropriate comments about her personal and family life.
Based on her complaint, Annamalainagar police registered a case. Following this, the university administration issued orders suspending the professor.
Police are also conducting a confidential inquiry into separate complaints that some university staff have allegedly sexually harassed distance education students who visit the campus for tasks such as obtaining certificates from the examination wing.
