Chennai: Former BJP Tamil Nadu president K. Annamalai, who has since quit the party and is running the organisation ‘We The Leaders’, is reportedly reaching out to several former MLAs to strengthen the outfit.
The organisation has been conducting awareness programmes on issues such as drug eradication and environmental protection. According to information shared in the report, the group has so far enrolled about 2.019 million members.
Sources within ‘We The Leaders’ said Annamalai had earlier brought more than 15 former MLAs from various parties, including the AIADMK, into the BJP during his tenure as state president. However, barring a few, many of them did not receive even party posts, the sources claimed.
The same sources said Annamalai is now holding discussions again with those who had joined the BJP trusting him, and is also speaking to former AIADMK and DMK MLAs and functionaries who are seen as relatively controversy-free and having some public influence.
While ‘We The Leaders’ is said to be strong in the Kongu region, it is described as weak in the southern districts. The sources added that Annamalai is looking to build the organisation there by bringing in former legislators and is considering offering state-level responsibilities to those who join.
