India finished with a silver medal in the Open section and a bronze in the women’s section at the 46th Chess Olympiad held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
In the final round, the Indian men’s team drew their match against Hungary. With that result, India and Germany were level on 18 points, and India were awarded silver on tie-break. Uzbekistan clinched gold after defeating Ukraine, while Germany settled for bronze.
In the women’s event, India drew with Georgia in the last round to secure the bronze medal. China won the gold by beating Vietnam, and Kazakhstan took silver.
In individual honours, Savitha Sri delivered a standout performance for India, winning an individual gold along with a bronze. Koneru Humpy and Vandika Agarwal claimed individual bronzes, while Divya Deshmukh won an individual silver. In the men’s category, R Praggnanandhaa won an individual bronze.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin congratulated the medal winners, noting that four of the 10 Indian players across both teams—Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh, Vaishali and Savitha Sri—were from Tamil Nadu, and said the results would further boost the state’s stature in world chess and inspire young players.
