India opened the three-match ODI series with an emphatic eight-wicket win over West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.
After winning the toss, India captain Shubman Gill chose to field. West Indies got a strong start through openers Campbell and Greaves, who both reached half-centuries. Campbell fell for 62 with the score at 135, and India tightened the screws through Kuldeep Yadav’s spell.
Greaves went on to score 101, while Jangoo remained unbeaten on 58 as West Indies finished on 295 for 7 in 50 overs. Kuldeep led India’s bowling with four wickets, while Prasidh Krishna took two and Nitish Kumar Reddy claimed one.
In reply, Gill and Rohit Sharma provided a brisk start before Rohit was dismissed for 32. Gill and Virat Kohli then took control with fluent half-centuries, and although Gill was out for 110, Kohli carried the chase with a commanding hundred off 74 balls.
Kohli sealed the chase with back-to-back sixes as India reached the target in 41.4 overs to go 1-0 up in the series. The second ODI will be played in Guwahati on September 30.
Kohli also crossed 15,000 ODI runs, reaching the milestone in 303 innings—faster than Sachin Tendulkar’s 381 innings. He additionally surpassed Sachin’s record for most ODI runs in a single country, taking his tally in India to 6,983, and set his personal best for most sixes in an ODI innings with nine.
