Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remembered Ashok Singhal as a “great personality” committed to nation-building, as celebrations for the former Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) international working president’s birth centenary begin from September 27.
In his message, Modi said he had several opportunities to interact with Singhal and considered it a privilege to receive his affection. He noted that Singhal constantly thought about what more could be done for people on the margins of society.
Modi recalled Singhal’s presence during crises, saying he was often among the first to reach disaster-hit areas and to guide volunteers in relief efforts. He specifically mentioned the work they undertook together after the 2001 Kutch earthquake in Gujarat.
Highlighting Singhal’s organisational drive, Modi said he strengthened institutions and movements through perseverance and hard work, and was known for a powerful voice and compelling public speaking. He also pointed to Singhal’s simplicity and care for fellow volunteers.
Modi said Singhal’s role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement remains central, recalling the 1991 Boat Club ground rally speech and moments when Singhal was seen injured during the movement’s peak. He added that leaders like Singhal, who dedicated themselves selflessly, were among the reasons a grand Ram temple stands in Ayodhya today.
Modi further said Singhal worked to reinforce social unity and equality, believing discrimination should have no place and that every individual deserves equal dignity. He cited Singhal’s view that the first brick of the Ayodhya temple should be laid by Kameshwar Chaupal, a grassroots VHP volunteer from Bihar belonging to a marginalised section, and recalled his decision to accord due respect to the Dom Raja at a Dharma Sansad in Kashi.
Calling on people to mark the centenary meaningfully, Modi urged that more young people learn about Singhal’s contributions and that the nation renew its resolve to realise the dreams he held for the country and its people.
