Jalandhar: Tension flared at Lovely Professional University in Punjab’s Kapurthala district after social media posts claimed a woman student had died by suicide following an alleged gang rape.
What began as a peaceful protest late at night escalated as some students damaged window panes and flower pots inside the campus. A group also climbed onto a display MiG aircraft and artillery pieces kept on the premises.
The situation worsened when a section of the protesters allegedly set fire to part of a university building, triggering panic on campus.
Students later blocked the Jalandhar–Phagwara National Highway, causing heavy traffic congestion. Police held talks with the protesters and assured action, after which the crowd dispersed.
Police have registered a case and formed a Special Investigation Team to probe the incident. The university administration, meanwhile, said the rape allegation circulating online was only a rumour.
