ERODE: Hindu Munnani state president Kadeswara Subramaniyam on Saturday demanded that the Tamil Nadu government give a clear assurance that the beacon atop Tirupparankundram hill will be lit during the upcoming Karthigai Deepam festival, citing a Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court order.
Speaking in Erode, he said the assurance should specifically cover lighting the lamp at the deepa thoon (beacon pillar) located on the hilltop. He announced that Hindu Munnani would hold a statewide protest on October 11 in all district headquarters to press the demand.
He also said a prayer girivalam (circumambulation) would be held on Tirupparankundram hill on the full moon day, October 25, and appealed to devotees to participate.
During the address, he criticised the ruling DMK government, alleging it was anti-Hindu. He referred to the collection of charges related to mobile phones in temples and said the practice was modified after objections, allowing devotees to carry phones switched off.
He further alleged that officials with atheist, communist and Naxalite leanings had been appointed at the Tiruchendur temple, and made political remarks about voting in by-elections at Maduranthakam and Dharapuram.
