Madurai: Chief Minister Vijay on Monday visited the Madurai Government Hospital and personally presented gold rings to newborn babies under the ‘Thaymaman Gold Ring’ scheme.
According to officials, the Chief Minister handed over the first three gold rings of the programme to newborns from Hindu, Muslim and Christian families. He interacted with the mothers, lifted a few babies, kissed them on the forehead and comforted them during the event.
When one baby’s milk spilled while the ring was being put on, Vijay asked for a tissue and handed it to the mother to clean the child. At the request of some parents, he opened ring packets and ensured the rings were placed on the babies’ fingers by his own hand.
Two mothers who had already chosen names requested that the Chief Minister announce them; he whispered the names into the babies’ ears. Some women also asked for his autograph on their children’s clothes, and he obliged. One mother requested a selfie while holding her baby, and the Chief Minister posed for the photograph.
Health Secretary Tharesh Ahmed welcomed the gathering and Chief Secretary Saikumar presided. Ministers Viswanathan and Nirmalkumar, Collector Nishanth Krishna, and MPs Manickam Tagore and Venkatesan were among those present.
