Two revenue officials, including a Village Administrative Officer (VAO), were arrested in Avadi for allegedly demanding a bribe to issue a legal heir certificate.
The accused were identified as VAO Aravind (34) and village administrative assistant Ravi (53). Police said the demand was linked to an application submitted at the Kovilpathagai-2 VAO office.
According to the complaint, Shankar (32) of Kamarajar Nagar, Avadi, applied on September 23 for a legal heir certificate following the death of his father Munusamy, a retired employee of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department. The certificate was required for his mother Vanammal to claim pension benefits.
Investigators said the VAO initially demanded Rs 10,000 and later agreed to accept Rs 8,000 after negotiations. Shankar approached the Tiruvallur district vigilance and anti-corruption wing, which arranged a trap.
During the operation, Shankar allegedly handed over the tainted currency to assistant Ravi as instructed by the VAO. The anti-corruption team, led by DSP Jayakumar and Inspector Mala, caught Ravi red-handed and arrested both officials.
