RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Tuesday said India’s happiness should be measured by the happiness of its poorest citizens, arguing that a country can be considered truly happy only when the last person in society is content.
Addressing a programme in Yavatmal, Maharashtra, Bhagwat said the world would be happy if everyone in it was happy, and that this required India to be happy as well. He added that society must work to ensure all people experience well-being.
He said the happiness of the last person reflects the progress of the poor, and linked the idea to Mahatma Gandhi’s message of keeping the most marginalised in mind while making decisions and pursuing development.
Bhagwat also referred to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya’s view that real development focuses on the welfare of all. He said the gap in development between those at the top and those at the bottom of society should be reduced, while noting that development is taking place in the country.
