The Supreme Court has directed the Centre and the CBSE to consider students’ learning capacity and the challenges of picking up a new language before enforcing the three-language policy in CBSE schools.
The policy had been ordered as mandatory from Class 6, with implementation announced from July 1. A student and parents’ association moved the Supreme Court opposing the compulsory requirement for Classes 9 and 10.
When the matter came up for hearing again, the judges said the policy should not be imposed abruptly and that a phased rollout would be more suitable for students, keeping academic burden in mind.
Noting that Class 7 had already been granted relief from immediate compulsory enforcement, the court said Class 6 should also be given an exemption for the current academic year on the same basis.
