Mumbai’s iconic 122-year-old Irani cafe Kyani & Co has had its food safety licence suspended after officials flagged serious hygiene violations during an inspection.
The action was ordered by Tukaram Munde, Maharashtra’s Food Safety Commissioner, as part of a special drive ahead of the festive season. The inspection team carried out checks between September 23 and 27.
According to food safety officials, the cafe’s kitchen and food storage areas showed multiple sanitary issues, including flies, dead cockroaches, and rodent droppings. Officials also reported the presence of cats in the premises.
Citing conditions that could pose an immediate risk to consumers’ health, authorities suspended the licence under the Food Safety Act and imposed a complete ban on preparing and selling food at the outlet.
In the same enforcement drive, licences of 30 food establishments in Mumbai, including the well-known Royal China restaurant, were cancelled, officials said.
